Install Oracle Database 12c Software

Scenario


 Oracle Database 12c 12.1.0.1.0 Softaree Installation

This is a step by step installation guide for latest Oracle Database 12c 12.1.0.1.0 software  in a windows environment.

This installation is for learning purpose and assumes free license cost for any of the software used. 

All the software used to prepare this guide use trial copy.

Required Software Download


1. Database : Oracle Database 12c Release 1 (12.1.0.1.0)

2. Download Windows server 2008 R2 64 bit trial version from Windows Site.

I already had a trial pack for Windows server 2008 , so I am using the iso image of the 2008 R2  64 bit for Oracle 12c installation.

3. VMWare Workstation trial version can be downloaded from the following site:

Virtual Machine Creation


If one has a Physical Machine where Oracle Database Software can be installed then this step is not required. Jump to Oracle database Software Installation.

1. Create a Windows 2008 R2 64 bit Virtual Machine using VMWare.  Create The Windows 2008 R2 64 bit Virtual Machine, Initially allocate 20 GB hard disk with 2048 MB of RAM and 2 Virtual CPU thread.

2. Copy the Downloaded Oracle Database 12c Software in the vmware shared directory location.

Keep a backup of the Virtual Machine at this stage. This backup of the Windows 2008 R2 64 bit Virutal Machine can be used if some issue is encountered during Oracle Database 12c Software and 12c Database Installation.

Oracle database Software Installation


1. Unzip both the Oracle Database 12c Software Installation zip files.

 

2. Copy the installation files from unzipped files of winx64_12c_database_2of2.zip to the unzipped files of winx64_12c_database_1of2.zip. Go to ………..\winx64_12c_database_2of2\database\stage\Components and copy the folders.

Paste the folders in the ……..\winx64_12c_database_1of2\database\stage\Components of the first unzipped files.

3. Inside the Virtual Machine open the installation file directory and click setup.

4. Oracle Universal Installer   

Clicking setup will display the following window command prompt for around 1-2 minutes. Just wait.

5. Configure Security Updates

In the next window uncheck I wish to receive security updates via My Oracle Support.

 

 

 

6. Click Yes

7. Software Updates  

Press Next with Skip software Updates selected in the option box.

 

8. At this point the following error can be encountered:

SEVERE: [FATAL] [INS-30131] The initial setup that is required to run the installation program validation was not successful.
CAUSE: Access to the temp directory was not successful.
ACTION: Ensure that the current user has the necessary permissions to access the temp directory

This issue is reported when Admin Share in C$ is not working. Please run the following command to ensure that admin share on c$ is working for the user installing Oracle database Software.

net use \\localhost\c$

Local name
Remote name \\localhost\c$
Resource type Disk
Status OK
# Opens 0
# Connections 1
The command completed successfully.

If you observe that the command net use \\localhost\c$ is not working then either admin share for c$ is not enabled for the current user or the network adapter is not set properly. 

To enable admin share in c$ in windows do the following:

Create a hidden share

To create a hidden share, follow these steps:

  1. In Control Panel, double-click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Computer Management.
  2. Expand Shared Folders, right-click Shares, and then click New File Share.
  3. In the Folder to share box, type the path of the folder that you want to share, or click Browse to locate the folder.
  4. Type the share name that you want to use followed by a dollar sign, and then click Next.
  5. To make the share accessible to administrators only, select the Administrators have full control; other users have no access check box, and then click Finish.
  6. Click Yes to create another share, or click No to return to the Computer Management console.

Delete a hidden share

To delete a hidden share, follow these steps:

  1. In Control Panel, double-click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Computer Management.
  2. Expand Shared Folders, and then click Shares..
  3. In the Shared Folder column, right-click the share that you want to delete, click Stop sharing, and then click OK.

You can disable the admin share for current user installing Oracle database software after the database software installation is complete.

9. Installation Option

Click Install Database Software Only.

10. Grid Installation Options

select Single Instance Database Installation.

11. Product Languages

Select English

12. Database Edition

To have access to all the features of Oracle Database 12c select Enterprise Edition here.

13. Oracle Home User Selection

Use existing Windows Built-in Account.For a production environment you can choose to Create New Windows user for Oracle Database Software ownership although I don’t think that is required.

14. Press Yes

15. Installation Location

Select C:\Oracle as Oracle base. This will automatically generate the Software location as C:\Oracle\product\12.1.0\dbhome_1. Press Next.

16. Prerequisite Checks Summary

 In the Pre-Requisite Checks if any error is encountered, if those are not critical like memory shortage etc. choose to ignore the error and continue. You would get the following screen. Press Install.

17.  Install Product

Wait for Oracle Software Installation to finish. You may choose to check the following windows and Installation percentage completion status.

18. Finish.

Conclusion


 Installation of Oracle Database 12c starts with Vmware, OS installation, downloading the Oracle database 12c Software and then perform the Oracle Database Software installation. 

Next part will be creation of Oracle Database 12c Database creation with container database (CDB) and one Pluggable database ( PDB ) using the new Multitenant architecture.
